Who We Are and What We Do at Santa Cruz County AAUW
The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Santa Cruz County Branch is a dynamic community of individuals dedicated to promoting advocacy, equity, and education for women and girls. Founded in 1935, our branch has been a leading force in advancing gender equality and empowering women in the Santa Cruz County area. We are part of the California AAUW and National AAUW organization founded in 1881.
We are a Santa Cruz membership group that is open to anyone holding an associate or equivalent (RN), baccalaureate, or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Current students may also join.
Here are the AAUW Santa Cruz Branch 2023-24 Goals:
- Supporting Girls: Empowerment, Entrepreneurship, Financial Literacy, Health & Wellbeing, Leadership, Life Skills, Mentorships, Online Safety, Health and Physical Activity.
- Stopping violence against women, guns, domestic violence, human trafficking, elder abuse,
- Increasing financial Literacy: Basic and advanced money management and retirement planning.
- Increasing women’s representation in leadership and decision-making.
- Increasing the diversity of Branch Members.
- Expanding Careers Options: Educate about non-traditional careers and their salaries.
- Reducing gender-based discrimination and stereotypes
- Improving women’s healthcare: Gender bias, access, affordability, self-determination in reproductive health.
- Encouraging women and girls to study for STEM Careers
At AAUW Santa Cruz County, we believe that education is a powerful tool for social change. Our mission is to break down barriers and provide opportunities for women and girls to thrive in all areas of life. We are committed to promoting educational and professional development, advocating for policies that support women’s rights, and fostering a supportive network that encourages personal growth and leadership.
Our branch is comprised of diverse members from various backgrounds, including educators, professionals, students, and retirees. We come together with a shared passion for creating a more inclusive and equitable society. Through our programs, initiatives, and partnerships, we aim to address the unique challenges faced by women and girls in our community.
Education is at the core of our work. We offer scholarships to support women pursuing higher education at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and Cabrillo College. Our programs also focus on empowering girls at an early age by promoting STEM education and providing mentorship opportunities. We believe in the power of education to unlock potential and open doors to new opportunities.
